UPM has announced a collaboration with BASF to introduce fiber-based barrier packaging designed for high-fat foods as well as moist and dry products.
Through joint co-creation, UPM Specialty Materials and BASF have developed a fiber-based packaging concept that delivers the protection performance required for these applications while supporting recyclable design principles and complying with evolving food safety regulations.
The product combines UPM Solide Lucent or UPM Asendo—barrier papers serving as robust substrates for the barrier coating—with BASF Joncryl HPB, an aqueous barrier resin.
The UPM Solide Lucent-based structure offers excellent grease resistance along with strong moisture barrier properties, making it ideal for fatty food applications such as cheese packaging. The UPM Asendo-based structure provides moderate oil and grease resistance with good moisture barrier performance, specifically designed for dry goods such as sugar and bread, as well as bags, wrapping paper, and packaging liners.
This high-performance paper-based packaging structure:
1.Effectively withstands oil, grease, and moisture in demanding food applications.
2.Performs reliably and stably on existing processing lines.
3.Meets food contact safety requirements.
4.Is recyclable within the paper recovery stream.
